public improvisations

Back in 2019 I had spent some time publicly recording a number of improvisations in the pavilion of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. The improvisations were initially a creative break while I was doing a residency in the space (I was mostly just having fun playing in such a resonant acoustic), but the side project grew to a point where during the month of November, I was able to use the pavilion after hours, just playing and recording in the huge, empty space.

The ten improvisations are pared down from hours of music. They aren’t clean recordings - I used an old water pitcher as a mic stand - though Charles Harding kindly worked some mastering magic on them. But - in all their fuzzy imperfect mess, I feel like there’s something there. You can hear elevator doors pinging, people talking, footsteps. You can hear the space. This was a very personal project for me, and kept me grounded through the spring while everything in the world felt up in the air.
